Congress devises strategy for MCD elections

Ashok Gehlot calls meeting of party MLAs

NEW DELHI: To devise the party's strategy for the upcoming municipal elections in the Capital, the All-India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of Delhi affairs, Ashok Gehlot, on Tuesday called a meeting of party MLAs at the Congress headquarters here. Issues related to implementation of the Master Plan for Delhi-2021, sealing and demolitions, de-limitation and price rise were raised at the meeting.

Kalkaji MLA Subhash Chopra is understood to have raised the issue of providing general amnesty to the traders who were facing grave hardships because of the sealing and demolition exercise in the Capital. He also pointed out that the issue of providing relief to schools, which are facing an uncertain future due to the ongoing sealing and demolition drive, needed to be taken up seriously.

A few MLAs reportedly raised questions about lack of coordination between the organisation and the Government and not awarding party ticket to people who had been working at the grassroots level. However, Mr. Gehlot assured the MLAs that there was no reason for worry as the party and the Government were working in tandem and only deserving candidates would be given tickets.

Mr. Gehlot is said to have asked the MLAs to work in unison as delimitation would lead to an increase in the number of wards. Asking the MLAs to gear up, the Delhi in-charge also warned them not to expect any delay in the MCD polls as they were likely to take place on time.

The Delhi High Court has already asked the State Election Commission and the Delhi Government to inform it about the date of elections on January 25.

MLA Mahabal Mishra is understood to have suggested that in order to capture the votes of the migrant population, people from outside the State should be given more political representation.
