Koyambedu traders drop strike plan scheduled for January 22

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI : Traders of vegetables, fruits and flowers in the Koyambedu wholesale market withdrew their decision to strike work on January 22 after the talks they had with Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) officials on Friday.

According to V. R. Soundararajan, president of the Koyambedu Vegetable, Fruit and Flower Wholesale Traders Federation, CMDA vice-chairman R. Santhanam and member secretary M. Nasimudeen assured them that the Authority would look into their complaints. The officials said the work on improving civic amenities in the market complex would start after the Pongal holidays, added Mr. Soundararajan.

The traders had earlier planned to shut shop for a day to "condemn the laxity shown by the CMDA and Market Management Committee," by not putting in place better roads, drinking water supply and waste management systems.

The association's demands included expediting the process of handing over deeds of sale by the CMDA to the traders who have paid their instalments for shops.
