Relocate Kodungaiyur dumping ground: CPI(M)

Staff Reporter

Opposes privatisation of waste management

CHENNAI : Communist Party of India (Marxist) has asked the State Government to relocate the Kodungaiyur dumping ground and drop plans to privatise solid waste management in Pulianthope Zone.

In a press release issued recently, the party's district secretary T. K. Shanmugam appreciated the State Government and the Chennai Corporation for its announcements that infrastructure in north Chennai would be improved at a cost of Rs. 234 crore. Traffic problems had stifled residents of the regions and the decision to come up with flyovers and subways at key intersections were welcome, he added.

Mr. Shanmugam, however, pointed out that residents of colonies around the Kodungaiyur dumping ground had suffered for long and it was time that the Government relocated it outside the city in a non-residential area.

He also urged the Government not to issue orders to privatise solid waste management in Pulianthope Zone (Corporation Zone 3).

"When the previous AIADMK-led Council decided to privatise the Zone, the then DMK councillors protested and the proposal was dropped'', Mr. Shanmugam said.

``But now they are initiating this step themselves," he added.
