COIMBATORE: This one was a friendly tug of war, completely devoid of politics. Forty councillors of the Coimbatore Corporation took part in it as part of the Government's Samathuva Pongal celebrations on Monday.

Two teams of 20 councillors a side were pitted against each other. No side won. Both were so strong and unyielding that the rope snapped. That brought quite a few councillors to the ground, literally. Mayor R. Venkatachalam cooked pongal, the main delicacy of the festival celebrated to mark the harvest season.

Display of martial arts such as `silambu' and folk art such as `karagattam' were organised at the Corporation's main office at Town Hall in the city. Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy, Collector Neeraj Mittal, Corporation Commissioner P. Muthuveeran and representatives of various religious groups were present during the celebrations.
