IMPRESSED: Portugal President Anibal Antonio Cavaco Silva and his wife Maria light a lamp to inaugurate the Retail Learning Centre of Wipro Technologies in Bangalore on Tuesday. Sudip Banerjee, president, Enterprise Solutions Division, Wipro, looks on.
BANGALORE: President of Portugal Anibal Antonio Cavaco Silva on Tuesday said that he was keen on continuing the political link between Portugal and India, and that he was impressed with the growth of India. Prof. Silva was speaking to presspersons after inaugurating The Retail Learning Centre set up on Wipro Technologies campus at Electronic City here. He said: "We are impressed with what has happened in India after 1991 and the country has achieved remarkable rate of growth in development of some key areas, including information technology, pharma and biochemistry." He said, "Nowadays, in Portugal we talk about the changes taking place in Bangalore and it is our privilege to visit some of the leading companies in the world." On his visit to Bangalore, Prof. Silva said, "It was an ambition of mine to come to Bangalore and this is my first visit to India. `I am convinced'." Prof. Silva held discussions with the top executives of Wipro, including its Enterprise Solutions Division president Sudip Bangerjee during the visit. The visiting delegation that comprises business leaders from Portugal also participated in interaction. Wipro Technologies announced the setting up of its retail Centre of Excellence in Portugal. The centre will demonstrate the strength of Wipro's retail offering. Mr. Sudip Banerjee said, "With our acquisition of Enabler, Portugal has become a key hub for our global retail business. The centre in Portugal will cater to the need of global retailers and will work on developing solutions and deployment skills that can help improve their business performance." Earlier, Prof. Silva and his entourage were given a warm welcome by Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok at the airport on arrival from Goa. Among those who were present to receive the visiting dignitaries were Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi and Bangalore Mahanagara Palika Administrator Dilip Rau. Prof. Silva is accompanied by four Portuguese Ministers Minister of Culture Isabel Pires De Lima, Minister for Economy and Innovation Manuel Antonio Gomes De Pinho, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Joao Cravinho, Minister of State for Science Technology and Higher Education Manuel Heitor besides Members of Parliament and nearly 70 business leaders.
