BJP alleges discrepancies in Goa poll rolls

Urges Election Commission to eliminate bogus voters

  • Party delegation meets Gopalaswami
  • Misuse of funds alleged

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has alleged major discrepancies in the preparation of electoral rolls in Goa, where Assembly polls are to be held this year.

BJP leaders from Goa led by party spokesman Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N. Gopalaswami and demanded deployment of Election Commission observers to scrutinise the voters' lists and eliminate bogus voters.

Talking to newsmen here Mr. Javadekar said the delegation comprising Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Manohar Parrikar and Goa BJP president Shreepad Naik brought to the CEC's notice the "large-scale issuance of bogus voter identity cards." The BJP leaders pointed out that they had detected bogus cards that had similar identity numbers, addresses and names but the photographs were different.

As constituencies in Goa were small even an addition of 500 bogus voters could affect the final results. "We have requested the Election Commission to grant us one month's time for identifying such bogus voters in the presence of observers," Mr. Javadekar said.
