NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission has announced an interim relief of Rs. 2.80 crore to 89 victims of atrocities committed by the joint Special Task Force, set up by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, to apprehend brigand Veerappan. The NHRC said a probe would also be soon constituted against the erring officials. "Our priority is to provide justice to victims. However, we will set parameters soon on how to go about the identification of guilty officials responsible for violation of human rights," Justice Shiv Raj Patil, acting chairperson of the NHRC, said on Monday. He said the Commission had directed Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Governments to distribute monetary relief to all those victims living in their States within four weeks. The NHRC recommendations were based on the suggestions made by the two-member Sadashiva Panel constituted by the Commission in 1999 to look into all the aspects of the allegations made by the complainants. The amount of monetary relief is based on the gravity of crime. "We have recommended Rs. 5 lakh each as interim relief to the next of kin of the persons who were killed in suspicious encounters. In three cases of illegal detention and outrage of modesty, interim relief of Rs. 3 lakh has been given while a woman who was victim of repeated rape will get Rs. 5 lakh," he said. Similarly, the Commission directed the State Governments to give interim relief of Rs. 2 lakh each to three women who were victims of detention, assault and electric shock.
Act quickly: PMK
