Two sites for desalination plant identified

Metrowater invites tenders again

CHENNAI: Nemili and Thiruvidanthai, about 40 km south of Chennai, are among the sites identified by Metrowater for establishing a Central Government-supported seawater desalination plant. The sites are on East Coast Road. Metrowater wants to set up the plant on the southern outskirts of the city, say sources. The capacity of the plant is 100 million litres a day (MLD). Metrowater's other desalination project, to be executed on design, build, own, operate and transfer mode, is to come up at Minjur, on the northern outskirts.

For the preparation of a detailed project report and bid documents for the Centre-aided project, Metrowater has invited tenders for the appointment of a consultancy agency again. In September, it issued a notice inviting tenders (NIT). But there was no response. One of the reasons was the condition that prospective consultants should have worked for a 20-MLD project. This was found to be restrictive. Hence, Metrowater relaxed the rule.

The applicants should have prepared a detailed project report for at least one 10-MLD seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant and it should have been commissioned and functioned satisfactorily, according to the fresh NIT.

As for the other desalination project, the deadline for the company to achieve financial closure was extended from January 2 to January 25, say the sources.
