CHENNAI . A new floor at `Mottukal', shelter for street children and orphans, was inaugurated by actor Radhika Sarath Kumar on Sunday morning. It is funded by charitable organisation Samarpan. Mottukal is a non-profit, non-government organisation of the Good Shepherd Sisters in Chennai, started in 1996 with two runaway girls from the railway station. Today it shelters 55 girls. The institution focuses on the special problems facing girls who live on the streets. Samarpan concentrates on helping deserving, economically weak children pursue an education. The new block at Mottukal is spread over 1800 sq ft with a living room, terrace, sick room and storage space. Radhika, who is an alumnus of Good Shepherd School, reminisced about her time in school where she said she had to be dragged to the classroom everyday. She also saluted one of her Standard V teachers present at the event. The inaugural function was followed by a cultural programme of dance and music.
