Staff Reporter

It will be developed at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh

ERODE: Following the plea made by the Union Minister of State for Textiles, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, the Erode district administration has decided to develop the Kodivery reservoir as a tourist spot.

The reservoir is situated 15 km from Sathyamangalam on the Sathyamangalam-Bangalapudur Main Road and has attracted thousands of tourists from various places. In Kodivery, the Bhavani River water is stored and released into the two canals at Thadapalli and Arakkankottai for irrigation.

The Collector, D. Karthikeyan, told newsmen recently that the reservoir would be beautified at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh. Out of the total amount, Mr. Elangovan had granted Rs. 12.50 lakh from his MP Constituency Development Fund and the remaining amount was sanctioned by the State Government. The Collector said all infrastructure facilities would be developed in the dam and the bathing ghat, dressing room and park.

The Collector said using MP Development Fund, 125 works were taken up at a cost of Rs. 4.87 crore. Of this, 36 additional school buildings are constructed at a cost of Rs. 2.12 crore. Three water supply schemes have been taken up involving an outlay of Rs. 16.20 lakh. Six hospital buildings were constructed at a cost of Rs. 35.75 lakhs and 10 road works were undertaken at a cost of Rs. 19 lakh. All the works would be completed before March 2007, the Collector said.

Under the MLA Constituency Development Scheme, Rs. 1.20 crore was sanctioned for each constituency. Accordingly, Erode district was sanctioned Rs. 13.20 crore this year. With this fund, development works would be undertaken in the constituencies. Initially, 2,297 works were undertaken at a total cost of Rs. 10.47 crore. The Collector said under the scheme, group houses for Adi Dravidars and Scheduled Tribes would be built at Rs. 37,000 each for which the MLAs should provide details to the District Rural Development Agency.

Mr. Karthikeyan said that Rs. 14 crore had been sanctioned to the district for the implementation of `New Anna Marumalarchi Thittam' in 70 panchayats at Rs. 20 lakh each. Committees at the rural level had been formed and after getting approval from the panels, the works would be taken up.
