Undertrial escapes, policemen suspended

Coimbatore: A murder case undertrial Arulraj (23) escaped from police custody at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Tuesday.

According to the police, Arulraj of Paravathipuram in Nagercoil was arrested in connection with the death of a suspected commercial sex worker Shanthi alias Stella Mary (38) at Kuniamuthur recently and was lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison. On January 13, he was admitted to the CMCH after he complained of illness. He escaped from the convict ward of the CMCH, when he was taken for medical check-up by an Armed Reserve constable.

The City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhi Rajan, has placed the Armed Reserve constable Jayakumar and head constable Karunakaran under suspension on charges of dereliction of duty and custodial lapse leading to the escape.
