KOCHI: Dissemination of information on the latest developments in the world of science and research holds the key to the development of any society. It is with this in view that the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has decided to set up a dedicated facility for the purpose to act as a bridge between research institutions and the public.
Programmes
The Centre for Creative Writing has thus been renamed Centre for Science Communication. The centre will coordinate science and technology popularisation programmes in the State as well as create a strong group of science communicators and journalists. One of the visions of the centre is to make science communication and journalism an academic branch of study. This is a long-term goal, said an official with the new centre. Besides, the centre also plans to train scientists, students, technocrats and journalists in science communication.
Workshops
Short-term workshops and refresher courses in the area of science communication will be organised frequently. The centre also plans to develop a science and technology communication network system, along with coordination with other agencies involved in popularisation of science. The order renaming the Centre for Creative Writing as Centre for Science Communication also makes way for providing a separate head of account in the budget with a provision to report to the Registrar. A. Aravindakshan will head the centre as its director. The university authorities have also decided to include the centre in the 11th Plan proposal document.
