'Kaanum Pongal' celebrated

Police have made elaborate security arrangements

ERODE: More than thousand women gathered at Erode Municipal VOC Park to celebrate `Kaanum Pongal' on Wednesday. "No men were allowed inside the park. Even boys aged above seven were barred from entering the park," sources said.

Various entertainment programmes were organised by the women.Even the male eatable vendors were not allowed. The Park watchman and gatekeeper were remained in the Park entrance. Police had made elaborate security arrangements for the festival. omen Police Sub Inspector, Constables and volunteers were deputed duty inside the park.

Similarly, only women and children were allowed inside the Children's Scientific Park.

In Bhavani `Anaithoppu', Kodivery and Bhavanisagar reservoirs and Park heavy crowd was seen. and they enjoyed the whole day there and returned only in the evening.

Many people visited temples with their family.

Most of the shops and commercial establishments remained closed on Wednesday.Police pickets were posted in important places, especially near some IMFL shops located in vulnerable points.

Mentally ill joins

Ten mentally ill patients along with their family and doctors recently celebrated Pongal at the Ward for Mentally Ill at the Government Hospital, Erode.

Dr. S. Gnanamani, Joint Director, Health and Family Welfare, performed a small puja at the ward and distributed sweets to the patients, nurses and doctors.

He said under the National Mental Health Programme, the district would get psychiatrists, psychologists, trained nurses and social workers, who would tour Government hospitals at taluks to provide out-patient treatment to mentally ill.

A timetable would be drawn for the purpose.
