London: Middlesbrough held off a late rally to beat Hull 4-3 and advance to the fourth round of the English FA Cup football tournament, and was joined by fellow Premier League club Manchester City. Middlesbrough led 3-0 by the 57th minute of its third-round replay before Hull scored twice in four minutes. Mark Viduka scored his second goal in the 64th minute to make it 4-2, before Hull's Andy Dawson made it 4-3 with his second goal of the match in the 69th. "The boys were very disappointed at the end because they feel they have let themselves down but I had to remind them, we are through to the next round and that is what matters," Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate said.
Vassell nets winner
Manchester City beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1. Darius Vassell scored the winner for Man City in the 56th minute, shooting into the top corner after taking a pass from Bernardo Corradi. Stephen Ireland had put City ahead in the 44th minute before Lee Bullen levelled for Sheffield in the 51st. "We haven't fired on all cylinders and missed a lot of chances. The onus is on the Premier League side to make sure there is not an upset. They took us all the way in the first leg. All credit to them," Man City midfielder Joey Barton said. City will play Southampton in the next round.
The results: FA Cup: Southend bt Barnsley 2-0; Bristol City bt Coventry 2-0; Ipswich bt Chester 1-0; Manchester City bt Sheffield Wednesday 2-1; Middlesbrough bt Hull 4-3; Wolves bt Oldham 2-0; Plymouth bt Peterborough 2-1 AP
