Corrections and Clarifications

In a box item "Few takers for Bush plan" ("International" page, January 17, 2007), a sentence was: "By more than 2-1, those surveyed opposed the [U.S. President's] plan to send an additional $1 dollars in economic aid for Iraq." It should have been "$1 billion".

In "Balakrishnan takes over as new CJI" (January 15, 2007), a paragraph in the report was: "Last week, he [Justice K.G. Balakrishnan] was part of a nine-judge Bench that ruled that all laws inserted in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution would be subject to judicial review if they violated the Basic Structure of the Constitution and infringed on the fundamental rights of citizens." It was an error, and corrected in the later editions. The Judgement Information System, Supreme Court of India, states that the nine-member bench was made up of Y.K. Sabharwal, Ashok Bhan, Arijit Pasayat, B.P. Singh, S.H. Kapadia, C.K. Thakker, P.K. Balasubramanyan, Altamas Kabir and D.K. Jain.

Clue 9 Across ("Variety" page, The Hindu Crossword 8812, January 17, 2007) was: "Time's — chariot hurrying near (Donne) (6)". The line is not from Donne's work, but from Andrew Marvell's poem "To His Coy Mistress", line 22. The complete line is "But at my back I always hear/Time's wingèd chariot hurrying near". Andrew Marvell (1621 - 1678) was an English poet, politician and satirist.
