NAGAPATTINAM: Non-governmental organisations have been told to speed up construction of permanent houses for the tsunami victims in Nagapattinam district. The State Government is keen to hand over as many houses as possible before March-end. Official sources said as Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would be visiting Nagapattinam on January 31 to hand over about 500 permanent houses to the tsunami-hit families built by Mata Amritanandamayi Math, the district administration convened a meeting of representatives of the NGOs to complete the construction as early as possible. About 2,000 houses have been handed over to the tsunami-hit families in the district out of the 18,634 houses proposed to be built in 76 locations in the coastal villages in Nagapattinam, Vedaranyam, Thalainayar, Keezhaiyur, Sembanarkovil, Kollidam and Sirkazhi blocks in the district. The district administration had hoped to hand over nearly 4,000 houses by Pongal. Out of the total 18,634 houses, 48 NGOs have been entrusted with the task of constructing 16,829 houses. The remaining1,805 would be built by the BSNL and utilising the Rajiv Gandhi Tsunami Relief Package Fund.
