NEW DELHI: The UPA Government has put on hold all fresh cases awaiting approval as SEZs till the time the Group of Ministers reviews the existing policy and, as directed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a new rehabilitation package is formulated for the affected farmers. According to an official communication here, the meeting of the Board of Approvals (BoA) in the Ministry of Commerce, which was to take up over 70 new cases under the SEZ policy on January 19, has been postponed because of "unavoidable circumstances." The Ministry of Rural Development, it may be recalled, has been entrusted with the task of formulating a rehabilitation package for farmers, who will be displaced owing to acquisition of their land for setting up SEZsand other industrial projects.
