FORMAL REVIVAL: Kadapa Collector M.T. Krishna Babu performing pooja to launch cane crushing at Chennur.
KADAPA: District Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said on Wednesday that a decision was taken to increase sugarcane procurement price from Rs. 950 to Rs. 1,000, to ensure farmers' welfare. The Collector formally launched cane crushing at Kadapa Cooperative Sugars Ltd. at Chennur and said an investment of Rs. 14 crores, sanctioned by the Government, was made on the factory in the last two years. In addition to Rs. 1,000 per tonne, farmers would be paid transport charges ranging from Rs.15 to 100 depending on the distance.
Optimal capacity
The factory set up in 1973 with a cane crushing capacity of 1,250 metric tonnes had never achieved optimal capacity so far, he said. Industrial Development Bank of India had seized the factory in 1995, when its cumulative losses reached 16.50 crores. The factory was revived after the Government cleared debts of Rs. 3.66 crores, Mr. Krishna Babu said. The sugar unit would be able to secure assistance from financial agencies if it achieves 100 per cent crushing, he said. Ryots were seeking cane price of Rs. 1,200 per tonne, in view of increase in diesel price, Proddatur MLA N. Varadarajulu Reddy said. He assured to apprise Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy of the demand.
