Kakinada: The millers are facing hardship owing to strict enforcement of norms by the FCI in procuring rice from millers in East Godavari district, according to Chundru Saibaba, vice-president of Kakinada area Rice Millers' Association. He told newsmen here on Wednesday that the FCI was liberal till last month. But, of late it started insisting on higher standards such as more polish. He regretted that though the government had directed the authorities concerned to relax the norms in view of the lower yield this year due to pest attack, the FCI was adopting a different stand. Mr. Saibaba said that the insistence on higher standards had resulted in fall in rice levy. While 8,000 tonnes of rice was procured by the FCI last month from millers, it was only 3,000 tonnes this month. He said that millers were losing heavily as they had purchased the paddy paying much higher rate almost Rs.100 over and above the Minimum Support Price. He appealed to the government to intervene and prevail upon the FCI to relax the norms taking into consideration the lower crop yield.
