Cracker bursts near Chandy's meet venue

Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: A cracker burst about 50 metres away from the venue of a United Democratic Front meeting at Vennikkulam near Thiruvalla led to panic for some time, at least in the locality on Wednesday afternoon.

The blast occurred while Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy was inaugurating the meeting to protest against the attack on the UDF march and meeting allegedly by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers at Vennikkulam a week ago.

However, Mr. Chandy continued his speech for about 30 minutes even after the blast. He alleged that the CPI(M) was under the notion that the party could cover-up its faction feud by unleashing violence against the UDF workers.

Mr. Chandy alleged that the negative strategy of the CPI(M) to check the people's upsurge against the misrule of the Left Democratic Front Government by blasting crackers or country-made bombs would prove suicidal.

Delivering the keynote address, Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran alleged that there was every reason to suspect a larger political conspiracy behind the spree of violence sponsored by the CPI(M) in the State. The LDF Government diluted many important provisions in the abkari Act with a view to protecting the interests of abkari barons in the State, he alleged.
