List of polling stations identified

  • 5000 polling stations proposed across the State
  • Rolls contain 12.5 lakh voters for graduates constituency

HYDERABAD: Preparations for revival of the State Legislative Council reached a crucial stage on Wednesday when the list of polling stations identified for conduct of elections from graduates' and teachers' constituencies was forwarded to the Election Commission for approval.

Nearly 5,000 polling stations across the State have been proposed for the purpose. Once the EC approves the list, the State election authorities will allot eligible voters whose names figure in the electoral rolls already published to each polling station. Prepared mandal-wise, the rolls contain 12.5 lakh voters for the graduates' constituencies and 1.134 lakh voters for teachers' constituencies.

Chief Electoral Officer V. Bhaskar told The Hindu here on Wednesday that the notification for conduct of elections from the graduates' and teachers' constituencies was likely to be issued anytime after polling station-wise allotment of electoral rolls.

    YSR's visit

In the backdrop of this exercise, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy is leaving for New Delhi on a day's visit on Thursday. His visit is aimed at discussing with the Congress high command the likely party candidates for the Legislative Council on the basis of different criteria, primarily loyalty to the party.

Informed sources said the Chief Minister would use the visit to suggest to party bigwigs, a plan to constitute regional developmental councils, one each for coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema. He is also expected to brief the leadership about the various political developments, including the controversy raised by the Telugu Desam Party over the surrender of lands by his family to the Government for distribution to the poor.
