HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday directed the State Government to produce records pertaining to the release of Gouru Venkata Reddy, a Congress leader now serving a 10-year jail term for murder. The Bench was passing this order while dealing with a writ petition filed by Pervaram Ramulu, former Director General of Police. Ramulu contended that the Chief Minister has violated the constitutional mandate and sought declaration to the effect. He relied upon the recent judgment of the Supreme Court which had deprecated the whole process of granting pardon to Venkat Reddy, whose wife, G. Charita Reddy, is a Congress MLA. Senior Counsel S. Ramachandra Rao who argued on behalf of the writ petitioner traced history pertaining to Venkat Reddy. Advocate General C. V. Mohan Reddy contested this and said Venkat Reddy has been acquitted in all the cases except one. The Advocate General And Assistant Solicitor General complained to the court that it was basically a publicity-interest litigation and the court should not encourage it. The Bench posed various queries to both sides and then declared that it wanted to peruse the records pertaining to the case wherein Venkat Reddy was granted pardon by the Government at the instance of the Cabinet.
