DHARWAD: Sugarcane crop was destroyed in a fire accident at Nagalavi village of Dharwad taluk on Wednesday. The accident in the sugarcane field was noticed around 2 p.m. and the fire brigade was alerted immediately at Amargol between Hubli and Dharwad. Although the villagers tried to put off the fire, their efforts proved futile. They, however, prevented the fire from spreading to nearby farmlands where there were standing crops of maize, sugarcane and others. The fire brigade finally succeeded in putting off the fire after a two-hour exercise. The crop in 12 acres of land belonging to six persons was destroyed in the fire. Sources said the sugarcane fields belonged to Basappa Satannavar, Arjun D. Sigihalli, Adiveppa D. Sigihalli, Jinappa D. Sigihalli, Uday D. Sigihalli and Ellappa K. Asundi. Approximately 750 tonnes of sugarcane was destroyed in the fire. The loss is yet to be ascertained.
Another accident
In another fire mishap on Wednesday, a petty shop at Supermarket in Dharwad was gutted. The early arrival of the fire brigade prevented it from spreading to other shops in the supermarket. The total loss is yet to be ascertained.
