The Red Ribbon Club of Bharathidasan University's constituent college at Perambalur was inaugurated recently. The director, M. Nallu, said that the club, which has 50 students as members, would organise awareness campaigns on prevention of AIDS through cultural programmes and street-corner meetings at select villages in the district. The club's programme officer, S. Pugazhendhi, said that folk songs would be used to create awareness among the masses and to nurture students' talent.
A resource person in yoga, Karpagam, the field officer from Tamil Nadu AIDS Control and Prevention Society, I. Baskar, and a Siddha specialist, Kosiba, were among those who offered felicitations. In the present-day scenario where campus interviews and other opportunities are available at the doorstep of colleges, faculty members should not confine themselves to imparting academic skills. They have a greater responsibility in enhancing the life skills of students. The MNSK College of Engineering in Vallathirakottai in Pudukottai district organised a seminar exclusively for the faculty members on `Modern development in communication technology and job opportunities for students.' The principal, M. Hussain Mohamed, said that multi-national companies preferred employability skills to academic proficiency. Faculty members have a twin responsibility of developing the extra skills of students with focus on their career development. The director of the college, A. Gnanasambandan, who was the resource person, spoke on the 10 aspects of employability skills for recruitment by the information technology majors across the globe. NSS volunteers of Vivekananda Arts and Science College for Women at Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district participated in a 10-day camp organised by the NSS unit of the college recently. Volunteers took part in quiz competition and undertook cleaning of the temple at Sattanathapuram in Sirkazhi. The personality development programme came as a boon to the girls. K.V. Radhakrishnan, secretary of the college, presided over the inaugural and Ganesan of Poompuhar College delivered the keynote address. Hemalatha, college principal, explained the activities of the college. Subashini, NSS project officer, proposed vote of thanks.
