KPSC results

BANGALORE: Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) has notified the marks secured by the candidates in respect of 100 posts of auditors in the Department of Cooperative Audit in the competitive examinations conducted on September 24, 2006. Appeal

Bangalore: National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources and Gram Ganarajya Vedike have urged Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to prevent mining and other criminal activities in the forests of Mahadayi Valley in Khanapur taluk of Belgaum district. S.R. Hiremath, president of NCPNR, said the two organisations have decided to appeal to the Union and State Governments to declare these forests in the Western Ghats as an "ecologically sensitive area." — Staff Reporter

AIR mega serial

Bangalore: All India Radio, Bangalore, in association with Department of Kannada and Culture, will soon launch a mega serial titled "Kannadada Kanmanigalu". According to a press release here on Wednesday, the inaugural episode features M. Visvesvaraya; listeners will get to listen to a rare recording of his voice. Starting from January 21, the serial will be broadcast on all AIR stations in the State simultaneously on Sundays at 8.35 a.m. — Staff Reporter

Charge against Metro

Bangalore: Representatives from the Garment Workers Union, Unites India and other workers' unions have accused Metro Cash and Carry, the wholesale distribution network, which has units in Yeshwanthpur and Kanakapura here, of bad employment practices and ill-treatment of employees. Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, Karthik Shekhar, general secretary of Unites India, said many of the employees at Metro Cash and Carry have been dismissed without proper reasons or a notice period. — Staff Reporter

Group clash

BELLARY: Five persons sustained injuries in a group clash here on Tuesday night. Police said two groups, consisting of youths from Fort area, attacked each other with sticks and other lethal weapons near the BUDA complex. Rivalry between the groups was said to be the reason for the clash. All the injured have been admitted to hospital. Brucepet and Cowl Bazar police have registered cases. — Staff Correspondent

Low-cost computers

HUBLI: The Enterprise, a conglomerate offering value-added products and services to rural and semi-urban segments of India, plans to sell over 75,000 units of its low-cost computer in the next one year.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday Raj Khan, managing director and CEO, said the computers are in the range of Rs. 6,500 to Rs. 10,000. The computer comes with genuine accessories and licensed software copies of Microsoft and Tally, he added. — Staff Correspondent

ICFAI utsav begins

HUBLI: ICFAI Utsav-07, a management festival for undergraduate students began here on Wednesday.

Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swamiji of Moorusavir Math inaugurated the festival. Expressing concern over youngsters neglecting tradition outrightly, he said cultural programmes should be organised regularly.Presiding over the inaugural function, V.M. Plea to poll panel

PANAJI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded that the Election Commission extend the period for public verification of the voters' photo identity cards in the State by a month to sort out the alleged cases of bogus cards.

BJP leaders from Goa met the Election Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday and demanded that it should depute an independent observer to oversee the process in Goa. Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar said on Wednesday that the Party would give proof with documents regarding several cases that had come to its notice. — Special Correspondent

Buffalo attack

SIRSI: A mad buffalo caused panic in C.P. Bazaar and Unnimathgalli here on Wednesday. When the mad buffalo began to attack passers-by, there was panic. But when the matter was brought to the notice of municipal council Health Supervisor R.M. Vernekar and his staff, they took immediate action and got the animal caught.

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has appointed Raghavendra Raju of the city as its member representing consumer/agriculture. Tight security at Wipro facilities

BANGALORE: Chairman of Wipro Ltd. Azim Premji on Wednesday said that the company had upgraded security measures both physical and electronic systems to guard against the perceived terror attacks against the Wipro Technologies facilities.

Speaking to presspersons here after announcing the third quarter results of Wipro ending December 31, he said that efforts had been taken to make the security system foolproof. Mr. Premji said Wipro was not going overboard on the issue of threats from terrorist organisations.

Canara Bank interest rates up

Bangalore: Canara Bank has revised its rates of interest upwards on deposits of 180 days and above from January 18. The revised rates of deposit for 180 days and above to less than one year is 7 per cent; for one year and above to less than two years, 8 per cent and two years and above it is 8.5 per cent. — Staff Reporter

Flight to Trivandrum

BANGALORE: Kingfisher Airlines on Wednesday announced the launch of direct flights between Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram. Flights from Bangalore would leave at 6.40 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. to reach Thiruvananthapuram at 8.10 a.m. and 8 p.m. respectively. Flights from Thiruvananthapuram would leave at 8.40 a.m. and 8.30 p.m. to reach Bangalore at 10.10 a.m. and 10 p.m., said the release.

Bangalore: The examination of the subject "Theories of growth and development models", Rural Development Studies, which was scheduled to be held on Wednesday, has been postponed. According to a press release from Bangalore University, the examination will be held on January 29 at 11 a.m.

Protest

Bangalore: People's Front is holding a protest rally in Bangalore on January 19 in protest against the execution of Saddam Hussein. The former union minister and chairman of People's Front, C.K. Jaffer Sharief, has said that the execution by a "kangaroo court has shocked the conscience of those who trust and respect justice." Republic Day celebration

MYSORE: Deputy Commissioner S. Selvakumar convened a meeting of heads of various Government Departments on Tuesday to chalk out programmes to celebrate Republic Day. He said the district administration would celebrate Republic Day at Chamundi Vihar Stadium and hoist national flag at 9 a.m.

The District in-charge Minister would be given guard of honour and cultural programmes would be organised by schoolchildren, the Deputy Commissioner said.

MYSORE: The Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute (CSR&TI) Mysore, the premier institute in sericulture research, has established an IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) helpline for the benefit of sericulture farmers. Buses introduced

MYSORE: To help the commuters travelling between Mysore and Nanjangud in view of the cancellation of train service between Mysore and Chamarajanagar for gauge conversion work, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Mysore Division, has introduced 66 additional trips, apart from the 156 existing trips, from Wednesday, according to a release. — Staff Correspondent
