CHENNAI: Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be introduced in urban local body elections to be held in Tamil Nadu on February 8 for filling existing vacancies. According to a State Election Commission press release, EVMs will be used in elections to 44 wards of corporations, municipalities, third grade municipalities and town panchayats. The Commission would borrow EVMs from the Election Commission of India. However, in rural local body elections ballot boxes would be used.
Election schedule
Releasing the election schedule to fill vacancies in 491 wards in rural local bodies and 44 wards in urban bodies, the release said nominations would be accepted from January 19. The last date for filing nominations would be January 27. Scrutiny would be on January 29 and the last date of withdrawal, January 31. Elections, if necessary, would be held on February 8. Counting of votes would begin on February 9.
Code of conduct
The code of conduct would come into force with immediate effect in wards where elections were to be held, the release added.
