CHENNAI : The Madras Neuro Trust 2007 organised a programme recently to address the concerns of patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), which is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the central nervous system. The common symptoms of the disorder include muscle weakness, depression, poorly coordinated speech and pain. J.Arjundas, chairman, led the three-day session on MS. During an interactive session with patients, Peter Reickmann, a German Neurologist in the MS Research Group at Wuzburg, Germany, said, "research is going on for detecting the cause of the disease, but no conclusions have been drawn yet. The condition is managed only by addressing the symptoms." Jack Burke, Clinical Professor of Medicine (Neurology), University of Nevada School of Medicines, Reno Nevada, USA, and President of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Nevada, called for providing medical insurance to patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, as its treatment was very costly both in India and abroad. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of India, Tamil Nadu Chapter located in Chennai, has been provided office space by Bosch. It caters to over 80 patients in Chennai, offering them facilities like help for treatment, physiotherapy and counselling. To create awareness about Multiple Sclerosis and to reach out to those with MS, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India has proposed to have a walk on Sunday February 25, 2007. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of India can be contacted on 28156623.
