CHENNAI : It appeared to be a day to set the cash registers of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) ringing. With a view to "helping commuters", the corporation introduced several "M routes" (the letter M prefixed to the usual routes) in which the minimum fare was Rs.3. While appreciating the running of these buses, commuters complained that the corporation introduced the services perhaps with an eye on augmenting its revenue. When contacted, the Managing Director of MTC, R.Balasubramanian, said the corporation ran a total of 2,654 buses, including 100 specials, on Wednesday to help the commuters on the holiday. On normal days, only 2,350 buses would be operated in the morning and 2,150 buses in the afternoon shift, he said. Though the police claimed that bandobust arrangements were made, there was no dearth of harassment of women in front of police personnel and officers, particularly on the Marina and Kamaraj Salai. In some of the buses, though there was space inside, youths whistling, shouting and harassing girls passing by and also those inside the vehicles, blocked the footboard
