``Kidney racket has nothing to do with the tsunami ''

Four or five hospitals involved, says Letika Saran

CHENNAI : Police investigation has suggested that the kidney racket had nothing to do with the tsunami, said Commissioner of Police Letika Saran here on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, she said that after reports in a section of media that some persons residing in tsunami rehabilitation dwellings in suburban locations had been offered money to part with their organs, a police team investigated the case.

"However, we found that such a trade has been there for quite some time, say for about 3-4 years and it had nothing to do with tsunami."

When asked whether the police found any nexus between hospitals and donors, Ms Saran said though there had been no complaint received so far, the matter was being probed.

To another query, she said that investigations revealed that four or five hospitals in Chennai and one each in Tiruchi, Madurai and Tirunelveli were involved in the organ trade.

In some cases, the kidney donors themselves turned into agents. "All these aspects are being studied. We will submit the report to the government", she replied.
