City to get 350 MGD water supply

Special Correspondent

Completion of Krishna project phase II to ensure all-time high supply

HYDERABAD: Drinking water supply in Hyderabad and its surrounding areas will reach an all-time high of 350 MGD (million gallons per day) on completion of the Krishna water project phase II.

This prepares the ground for 24-hour supply and sanction of new tap connection as and when a consumer applies for it. The Krishna water project phase II has been taken up to bring an additional 90 MGD to the city from the foreshores of Nagarjunasagar dam. The Hyderabad Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is presently supplying 231 MGD from various sources — Nagarjunasagar (90 MGD), Singur Phase III and IV (75 MGD), Manjira II (45 MGD), Osmansagar (16 MGD) and Himayathsagar (5 MGD).

The Krishna project II, taken up at a cost of Rs. 830 crores, will have six reservoirs, three pumping stations and 110 km-long pipelines. The works will be launched shortly, Energy Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir announced here on Wednesday. He said water was being supplied round-the-clock on an experimental basis in Adikmet area to about 5,000 households. To prevent possible shortages in Singur and Manjira reservoirs, another Rs. 100-crore scheme was taken up to link them with Krishna project through a pipeline, he said.

Mr. Shabbir said additional storage would be created for the areas north of Musi at a cost of Rs. 21 crores with seven reservoirs. Similarly, for the areas south of the Musi, another seven reservoirs would be built at a cost of Rs. 33 crores. He said water supply and sewerage works worth Rs. 800 crores had been sanctioned to the old city.
