Awareness programmes on copyright planned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government proposes to make knowledge generated through State funding in the information technology sector available to the public through a suitable non-restrictive licence.

The draft IT policy, at the same time, stresses the need to create awareness of copyright. "The Government understands the need for creating awareness of copyright, patents and trademarks. Awareness programmes will be developed for the general public. "The Government shall provide orientation programmes to its law enforcement agencies to understand the intricacies of the laws under the relevant Central IT Act to curb unauthorised copying of copyrighted works.

"It is important for the Government to strike a balance between the interest of copyright owners and society. There are several new initiatives that are working on innovative legal frameworks for sharing knowledge resources on less restrictive conditions. Considering the social value of freely available knowledge resources, the Government will support efforts to build free knowledge."
