Day 2: another VIP at Wipro

Staff Reporter

United Kingdom will remain an open economy, says Gordon Brown

BANGALORE: The Wipro Technologies campus at Electronics City hosted another foreign dignitary on Wednesday — Gordon Brown, Chancellor of Exchequer, U.K.

Mr. Brown's visit follows the visit of Portugal President Anibal Antonio Cavaco Silva to the campus on Tuesday.

The Chancellor of Exchequer was accompanied by Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Alistair Darling and a host of senior officials from the U.K.

Speaking after inaugurating the International Conference Centre, Mr. Brown said, "United Kingdom will remain a open and friendly economy for investments and enable creation of jobs in the U.K."

On the Indo-U.K. ties, he said that collaboration was a possibility in the areas of science and technology, Information Technology and financial services. The collaborations continued to grow and would grow further, he added.

Complimenting Wipro, he said that the company was breaking new grounds in different areas and also in charitable work.

"It is a privilege to be here to open the international conference centre," he said.

Earlier, Chairman of Wipro Ltd. Azim Premji said that the company had an outstanding relationship with the U.K., and that it was expanding faster in U.K. than in any other place.

"The support we get from the U.K. Government is probably the best, and is one of the most open economies in the globalised era for services," he added.

Mr. Premji announced that Wipro Technologies would add 500 more employees in the U.K. in the next 12 months to support its operations. At present, a team of 1,900 employees was supporting the operations in U.K., he said.

Sudip Banerjee, president of Enterprise Solutions Division, said, "U.K. has been a key part of our global services vision from the beginning. The expansion of the U.K. facility is part of a strategic initiative to build a strong local presence and also ties in with our growth plans."

Girish Paranjpe, President, Finance Solutions, and other senior executives of Wipro were present.
