NEW DELHI: An Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Flight Lieutenant Sirao died when a Jaguar fighter aircraft crashed at the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan on Thursday.

A court of inquiry has been ordered to find out the cause of the accident.

First in 15 months

The aircraft crashed minutes after taking off from the Nal airbase near Bikaner at 4.40 p.m., said an IAF spokesperson here.

This was the first Jaguar crash after 15 months. Sixteen Jaguar fighters had crashed in the past 10 years, with 2004 being a particularly bad year for these Anglo-French fighters when four of them went down, including one at the Pokhran range.

Last year, seven IAF fighters crashed.
