dated January 19, 1957: Khrushchev praises Stalin

The Soviet Communist Party leader, Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, speaking at a reception to the visiting Chinese Premier, Mr. Chou En-lai, in Moscow on January 17, said, "Every Communist should be able to fight like Stalin to defend the interests of the working class." There was a long applause from the guests present when he described Stalin as "a model Communist in fighting for the interests of the working class." Mr. Chou En-lai also applauded loudly. Amid more applause, Mr. Khrushchev declared: "All of us Communists, members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, consider it a matter of pride for us to be as true to Marxism-Leninism as was Stalin himself." It was the second time in recent days that Mr. Khrushchev had praised Stalin in public. At a New Year-eve party in the Kremlin, he had said that all Soviet leaders were Stalinists in the "class struggle" and in the "fight against imperialism." Mr. Khrushchev began his speech by saying: "There is no need for me to say that I am a Communist." As his remark was being translated into Chinese, Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin interrupted with a smile, "but some people have been saying recently that you are a Stalinist." The Communist Party leader immediately assumed a more serious air and replied: "I don't separate Stalinism and Stalin from Communism." Then he launched into his comment on Stalin.
