dated January 19, 1957: Madras Seva Samajam

A self-governing orphanage in Madras is among the few institutions in the world cited in a UN study report as a model children's home helping the inmates develop self-assurance and build up character. The institution is the Seva Samajam Boys and Girls Home, where the children have their own "full-fledged Government" and a "court". The Government is headed by a "cabinet" whose ten elected "ministers" hold "portfolios" representing the various day-do-day services. The "court" has to "adjudicate" in disputes among the children. It has 120 inmates - 93 boys and 27 girls. The report, just published, was prepared by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
