The traditional practice of women from the community drawing intricate paintings or "rangoli" on the walls of houses plastered with red mud grew into the art of Chittara painting. These paintings are commonly found in Shimoga, Sagar, Soraba, Hosanagar, Teerthahalli, Sirsi, Siddapur and Yellapur areas. "Each line of painting will be symbolic of life. Birds, toys, flowers and people find a place in the Chittara designs," said J. Vijay Mohan, officer-in- charge of IGRMS. Eshwar Naik from Talguppa in Shimoga district's Sagar taluk and his assistant will offer training for fifteen days from January 23. The fifteen-day training programme will be held at IGRMS, which is also called the National Museum of Mankind, situated at Wellington House on Irwin Road. Those interested can contact Mr. Vijay Mohan at Wellington House, Irwin Road, Mysore 570001. (Ph: 0821-2448231)
