MYSORE: As part of its "Do and Learn" series, the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS) is holding a fortnight-long training programme in Chittara painting, which is regarded to be an amalgamation of music, painting and the very lifestyle of the Deevaru people, a small backward community in Malnad region.

The traditional practice of women from the community drawing intricate paintings or "rangoli" on the walls of houses plastered with red mud grew into the art of Chittara painting. These paintings are commonly found in Shimoga, Sagar, Soraba, Hosanagar, Teerthahalli, Sirsi, Siddapur and Yellapur areas.

"Each line of painting will be symbolic of life. Birds, toys, flowers and people find a place in the Chittara designs," said J. Vijay Mohan, officer-in- charge of IGRMS.

Eshwar Naik from Talguppa in Shimoga district's Sagar taluk and his assistant will offer training for fifteen days from January 23.
