Yuki Bhambri stuns Marquis

Principal Correspondent

KOLKATA: India's Yuki Bhambri justified his wildcard blowing off the challenge of compatriot qualifier Christopher Marquis in straight sets in the boys' singles quarterfinal of the ONGC-ITF juniors (grade III) tournament played at the DKS Sports Complex on Thursday.

Bhambri was joined in the last-four round by another Indian, Prajnesh Gunneswaran, who beat unseeded Romanian opponent Andrei Savulescu to brighten the possibility of an all-Indian final.

The biggest upset of the day came in the form of top seeded Rifat Biktyakov of Uzbekistan, who went down to eighth seeded Kittiphong Wachiramanowong of Thailand after losing successive tie-breakers in his quarterfinal match.

Top seeds fail

It was not a favourable day for the top seeds as the girls' section too was made head-less as unseeded Alyona Sotnikova of Ukraine ousted the top seeded Jessy Rompies of Indonesian in a match stretched to the decider.
