NEW DELHI: Ashok Chaturvedi will be the new chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the country's external intelligence agency. He will succeed P.K. Hormis Tharakan, who retires on January 31.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has cleared the appointment and a formal notification is expected to be issued soon, official sources said.

No outsider for job

The decision to elevate Mr. Chaturvedi, Special Secretary, as the next RAW chief was taken as the Government did not want to name an outsider for the top job.
