NEW DELHI: Well-known industrialist Lalit Mohan Thapar was cremated at the Lodhi Cremation Ground here on Thursday in the presence of a large number of industrialists, friends and admirers.

Mr. Thapar, who headed the Ballarpur Industries Limited (BILT), died at the Escorts hospital here on Wednesday following cardiac and renal failure.

The 76-year-old industrialist was rushed to the hospital on Sunday after he developed complications.

The man behind the rise of the Thapar Group of Industries, particularly BILT, Mr. Thapar took over the ownership of The Pioneer in 1991 and ran it till 1998.

A doyen

A doyen among Indian industrialists, Mr. Thapar was known for his generosity, love of life and passion for sport.

He studied at the Doon School and took an engineering degree from the University of South California.

A connoisseur of classical music, he encouraged young talent.

Son of Karam Chand Thapar, he remained a bachelor.

His nephew Gautam Thapar now heads BILT
