VIJAYAWADA: Defending champion Karnataka entered the semifinals in the boys' section after a nail-biting quarterfinal clash against Haryana in the 33rd junior National volleyball championship here on Thursday. Karnataka won 27-25, 21-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-8. In an engrossing five-setter, which lasted for 90 minutes, Karnataka, with P.R. Anoop and M.V. Nagesh penetrating the rival defence with their power-packed smashes won the first set 27-25. Haryana spikers fought well to bounce back after trailing 4-12. The resurgent Haryana lads took the next two sets, forcing the champion on the back foot. But in the final two sets, it was Karnataka all the way. Uttar Pradesh defeated Kerala 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 21-25, 17-15 to enter the semifinals.
TN outplays Goa
In another quarterfinal clash, Tamil Nadu outplayed Goa 25-12, 25-18, 25-15 in just 48 minutes. In the distaff section, Chandigarh got the better of Maharashtra 25-9, 25-22, 27-25, while West Bengal downed U.P. 25-18, 25-15, 25-11. Defending champion Kerala had little trouble in prevailing over Andhra 25-1, 25-16, 25-20. Tamil Nadu also made it to the last four defeating Haryana 25-11, 25-16, 25-5. The results: Girls (quarterfinals): West Bengal bt U.P. 25-18, 25-15, 25-11; Chandigarh bt Maharashtra 25-9, 25-22, 27-25; Kerala bt AP 25-21, 25-16, 25-20; Tamil Nadu bt Haryana 25-11, 25-16, 25-5. Boys (quarterfinals): Karnataka bt Haryana 27-25, 21-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-8; Tamil Nadu bt Goa 25-12, 25-18, 25-15; U.P. bt Kerala 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 21-25, 17-15.
