Speaking after inaugurating a workshop on implementation of the comprehensive village development project, he said that if efforts were not made to stem the alarming increase in migration to urban centres, only 40 per cent of the Indian population would be left in the villages at the end of 20 years. Delivering the presidential address, Minister for Rural Water Supply and Sugar, S.A. Ravindranath, said that officers responsible for implementing the Suvarna Gramodaya project should spend at least an hour a day in villages identified for the project. Bureaucrats tended to get tied down by paper work, which proved a big deterrent in meaningful implementation, he added. Principal Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, M.R. Srinivasamurthy said that the ambitious project was bringing several rural development projects under one banner.
Development
The first-of-its kind project, which will identify 1,000 villages each year for overall development, would tackle both infrastructure and human development issues. If implemented in earnest, all villages in Karnataka would be covered under the scheme in the next 10 years, he said. Twelve districts had been identified for the project this year and the process of selecting villages was in the last stages in eight of them, Mr. Srinivasamurthy said.
