Sharana Mela ends

HUBLI: The Sharana Mela that concluded at Koodalasangama in Bagalkot district on Tuesday has urged the State Government to prevail upon the Union Government to provide rail connectivity to important pilgrim centres such as Koodalasangama in Bagalkot district and Basavakalyan in Bidar district. A resolution in this regard was adopted at the valedictory function of the mela, Mate Mahadevi, seer of Basava Dharma Peethahas said in a release here on Wednesday.

Art teachers protest

DHARWAD: Several art teachers under the aegis of Akhil Karnataka Chitrakala Shikshakara Sangha began an indefinite fast here on Thursday demanding early appointment of art teachers in the State. Prior to that, they took out a protest march from Kadapa Maidan to the office of the Deputy Commissioner and handed over a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister. They demanded a uniform art curriculum in all government, aided and primary and high schools in the State. — Staff Correspondent

Philately workshop

MYSORE: Mysore Philatelics, an association serving stamp collectors, in association with Mysore Postal Division, will organise a workshop on philately at Rangayana on the Kalamandira premises here on January 21. Flower show in May

Official suspended

BIDAR: Zilla Panchayat CEO Jitendra Nayak has suspended, pending inquiry, Shesha Rao, secretary of the Kolar (K) Gram Panchayat for alleged financial irregularities and dereliction of duty. The officer had reportedly drawn Rs. 3.71 lakh from the gram panchayat account. There was no record about these transactions in the gram panchayat, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

DHARWAD: Karnatak University, Dharwad has on Thursday announced the results of M.A first semester Criminology and Forensic Science, M.A Philosophy third semester examinations held during November/ December, 2006, according to a release. `Construct jetty'

KARWAR: The extraction of sand from the Kali riverbed near here has led to clashes between the fishermen and the sand contractors.

The fishermen alleged that sand mining and transportation of sand in boats to the jetty at Kodibag near the river mouth has hampered fishing activities as the boats tore fishing nets. They pointed out that the Deputy Commissioner had promised to build a jetty at Halaga village on the riverbank, but it has not materialised. Gangadhar Bhat, MLA, said that he had written a letter to H.D. Revanna, minister for PWD and Energy, to construct the jetty at Halaga. — Special Correspondent

Four-day festival

PANAJI: A four-day annual festival will be held in the State from February 17. The festival will start with the inaugural parade of colourful floats to be held in the city.

According to Deputy Chief Minister Wilfred de Souza, the parade will also be held in other major cities such as Margao in south Goa on February 18, Vasco in south Goa on February 19 and Mapusa in north Goa on February 20.

The Tourism Department will not consider commercial floats for the competition. — Special Correspondent

Political agitation

PANAJI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to launch a political agitation against the controversial State Regional Plan 2011 from February 1 next. Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar said on Wednesday that his party had expressed its opposition to the plan and pledged its apolitical support to the ongoing agitation demanding scrapping of the plan. He took exception to the Goa Bachav Abhiyan's statement to gherao MLAs to demand their support to scrap the plan. — Special Correspondent

More sub-registrar offices to be set up

BANGALORE: The Revenue Department has taken up an exercise to streamline property registrations in the State, particularly in Bangalore, and towards this end, 21 more sub-registrar offices will be set up in Bangalore over the next few months. Minister for Revenue Jagadish Shettar told presspersons here on Wednesday that the workload on the six existing offices was too high and therefore, the Government had decided to reorganise them and constitute 27 offices. — Special Correspondent

`Save Democracy' campaign

Bangalore: Dalit Sangharsh Samithi (DSS) is conducting a "Save Democracy" campaign from January 19 till April 14 (to coincide with B.R. Ambedkar's birth anniversary) in response to the Supreme Court judgment that there could not be any blanket immunity from judicial review of laws inserted in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. The first seminar will be held in Karwar. The others will be in Shimoga and Belgaum. Laxminarayana Nagavara, State Convenor of the DSS, told presspersons here on Thursday that since India is a democracy, it was not fair to make the laws in the Ninth Schedule open for review. In a democracy, Parliament should be given the respect it deserves, he said. — Staff Reporter

Mysore: The Lokayukta police caught an assistant public prosecutor when he was allegedly accepting bribe in Mysore on Thursday. Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Eshwarachandra Vidyasagar said the assistant public prosecutor, Mahadevaswamy, allegedly demanded Rs. 1,000 from Ranjan Shetty of Udayagiri for a favour in a case on trial at the fourth Judicial Munsiff First Class Court here. — Staff Correspondent

Farmer ends life in Davangere

DAVANGERE: A farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide at a lodge here on Wednesday.

Dharmanna (23) of Basavanakote village in Jagalur taluk who had three acres of land had cultivated maize.

He became distraught when the crop failed. Since he had huge debts to clear, he might have taken the extreme steps, the police said.

Dharmanna is the second farmer to commit suicide in the past one week in the district.

Relief: State extends last date

BANGALORE: The State Government has extended the last date for providing compensation to the copra growers till January 24. Earlier, January 17 was the last day for receiving the compensation.

The farmers would be eligible for a compensation of up to Rs. 600 a quintal if their produce is auctioned below Rs. 4,700 a quintal at the regulated marketing yards of Tumkur, Mandya and Hassan districts.

Kumaraswamy's visit

BIJAPUR: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is scheduled to make an overnight stay at an HIV infected person's house in Bagalkot district on January 23. However, the identity of the host is yet to be disclosed.

According to sources, many HIV positive persons have shown interest to host the VIP.

Principals meet with Vittalmurthy

Belgaum: Principals of degree colleges in the district held a meeting to discuss their role in the forthcoming Vishwa Kannada Sammelan with I.M.Vittalmurthy, Secretary, Kannada and Culture, here on Thursday. The meeting was presided over by Prabhakar B. Kore, MLC.

Mr. Vittalmurthy said that the Government was doing its best to showcase the history of Karnataka, its art and culture and progress in various fields. The thrust would be on tourism. A special tourism package would be offered to foreign tourists on the occasion.
