NEW DELHI: "Tembare," the critically acclaimed novel of chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission and former Karnataka Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily can now be read by non-Kannadigas.

An English translation of the novel was released here on Wednesday.

The novel, which depicts the experiences of an exploited, marginalised Dalit community called Pambada in coastal Karnataka, has been translated into English by C.N. Ramachandran, a recipient of Katha award, whose works include translation into English of the great Kannada epic "Male Madeshwara."

Releasing the English translation titled "The edge of time," chairman of the Kendriya Sahitya Akademi Gopichand Narang hoped that there would be more such authentic translations of works of authors in various Indian languages. "There is a market for Indian literature abroad. The only thing that is required is to have authentic translations so that the readers abroad could savour the Indian works with their original flavour retained intact."

Senior advocate and former Ambassador to the U.K. L.M. Singhvi presided over the function. Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, B.A. Vivek Rai, welcomed the translation of the novel into English as, he said, it was more like a blueprint for the future development of India in the 21st century. The English translation has been published by Delhi-based Rupa and Co.
