Delhi to get sleek new bus stops

NEW DELHI: With the Delhi Transport Corporation inviting private sector participation for construction of 225 bus shelters on a build-operate-and-transfer (BOT) basis, the Capital is set to get by this year-end sleek bus shelters that will not only be disabled-friendly but also environment-friendly.

The bus shelters, to be built by the bid-winning firm, will have provision for rainwater harvesting. The supporting bars of the shelter will be hollow and will allow rainwater to seep into a pit. Only excess water will go into the storm water drain.

The new shelter will be a steel structure with a "modern" and "aesthetic" look with a polycarbonate roof. It will also have provisions for rooftop advertisements and ramps, railings and beepers to aid the disabled, said a senior DTC official.

On the rear side of the bus shelter will be space for social messages. There will also be provision for solar lighting. Each shelter will have clocks and route maps as well. Of the 225 bus shelters, some are new constructions while others will be replacement of old ones, said the official.

The shelters will come up on roads leading to the two inter-State bus terminals, three railway stations and the airport.

The DTC also seems to be gearing up for the Commonwealth Games-2010 in a big way as the bus shelters will come up on roads leading to most of the venues for the Games.

The DTC issued tenders this past week. The pre-bid conference for the project for which RITES is the bids-process manager will be held on January 25.

The construction of the 225 bus shelters is to be completed within 26 weeks by the company winning the bid. The shelters will be transferred to the DTC after ten years.
