MYSORE: Members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and Hasiru Sene will organise a rally and dharna in Chamarajanagar on Monday in protest against the "apathy" of the Government in addressing the problems faced by farmers of Chamarajanagar district.

Dharna

President of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha Kodihalli Chandrashekar told The Hindu on Thursday that a large number of farmers would participate in the rally and dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

Mr. Chandrashekar alleged that the "failure" of successive governments in fixing prices of farm produce in a scientific manner, irrational power policy and the delay in the completion of irrigation projects had affected farmers.

Welcome

Mr. Chandrashekar said that though the decision of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government to give priority to farm credit was welcome, financial institutions and companies manufacturing farm equipment were exploiting farmers.

The Union Government should take action against such financial institutions and companies, Mr. Chandrashekar said.

Chamarajanagar district unit president Mahesh Prabhu said that nearly 4,000 farmers, who had purchased tractors and tillers, were facing a problem in repaying their loan.

Delay

The delay in the implementation of the second phase of the irrigation project and drought had affected many farmers of the Kabini command area, Mr. Prabhu said.

Criticising the energy policy of the Government, Mr. Chandrashekar said that only uniform power tariffs would help solve the problems of farmers.

Denied

Referring to the problems of sugarcane farmers, Mr. Chandrashekar said that while farmers in many districts of north Karnataka were getting Rs. 1,300 a tonne, those in the Mysore region were denied such a price.

Despite an announcement by the Minster for Sugar, farmers from the Mysore region were yet to get Rs. 1,200 a tonne of sugarcane, Mr. Chandrashekar said.
