MYSORE: Tension prevailed for some time at a function organised at the Town Hall here to distribute farm equipment to beneficiaries when Janata Dal (Secular) workers staged a protest against former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for taking "credit for the facilities" provided by the Government.

Thirty Janata Dal (Secular) workers led by party's youth wing leader Bannur Kumar came at the Town Hall in a procession from Kote Anjaneyaswamy Temple at the North Gate of Mysore Palace and began shouting slogans against Mr. Siddaramaiah.

`Undue credit'

Taking exception to the "failure" of the organisers to invite Minister in-charge of Mysore district D.T. Jayakumar to the function, the Janata Dal (Secular) workers accused the Congress of taking "undue credit" for the facilities provided by the Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government.

The function was held to give away farm equipment such as tractors and tillers to 369 beneficiaries from the Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency represented by Mr. Siddaramaiah.

The Janata Dal (Secular) workers argued that Mr. Jayakumar should have been invited to the function in his capacity as the Minister-in-charge of the district since the beneficiaries had been chosen under Government schemes.

Congress workers objected to the behaviour of the Janata Dal (Secular) workers and staged a protest against their efforts to "stall" the function.

When the situation became tense, the police took some Janata Dal (Secular) workers into custody.

They were bundled into a police vehicle and taken away. They were, however, released later. Mr. Siddaramaiah reached the venue a few minutes later and distributed tractors, tillers and other farm equipment to the beneficiaries.
