Sarhaul (Haryana): The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, on Thursday announced an aid of £200 million for the state-run Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan for universal elementary education.

"India's objective, which is that every single child has education, and the determination to achieve that by 2010, which is the next three years, has led us today and I am glad [Gareth] Thomas [Parliamentary Under-Secretary in the Department for International Development] is with us, to be able to announce that we, Britain, will provide another £200 million to make possible education for every child," said Mr. Brown after visiting a school here. The programme aims at 100 per cent enrolment in primary schools.

The funding of the programme will be done through the Department for International Development (DFID), which is supporting the programme along with the World Bank and the European Commission. The DFID is working with the Government of India, the World Bank and the EC for external support of the second phase of the programme from 2007 to 2010.

The number of children out of school has fallen from 25 million in 2003 to 13.5 million in March 2005, and initial reports of 2006 indicate the number has reduced further. — ANI
