Efforts on to implement new water schemes for suburbs

Aliyar Scheme takes off; to benefit two municipalities and a panchayat

COIMBATORE: Efforts have begun to implement two drinking water supply schemes for the suburbs on the city's southern and western borders.

The schemes were proposed in 1999 and have reached the stage of implementation only now. Funds constraints faced by the local bodies are said to have delayed the implementation of the projects.

Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy launched the works for the Aliyar Scheme for Kurichi and Kuniamuthur Municipalities and the Kinathukadavu Panchayat.

Under this Rs. 49.43-crore scheme, water will be drawn from Aliyar River near Aathupollachi and brought through a main pipe running to 47 km. Water will be stored in 15 overhead tanks to be built under this scheme and supplied to these local bodies.

Kurichi, Kuniamuthur and Kavundampalayam Municipalities and the Vadavalli Town Panchayat and Veerakeralam Panchayat together get roughly around 10 mld. This is the quota allotted to them about 15 years ago.

All these local bodies are totally dependent on the Siruvani scheme.

While the Coimbatore Corporation takes 87 mld of Siruvani water (of the total drawal of 101 mld), only around 10 mld is still provided to the suburbs that are witnessing a rapid rise in population.

While the city's more than 11-lakh population gets alternate day supply from two sources, people in the suburbs get water only once in four or five days.

It had been erratic when water level dipped during scarcity from 2000 to 2003.

Fresh tenders

The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board had also drawn up a scheme for Kavundampalayam, Vadavalli and Veerakeralam, with River Bhavani as the source.

The Rs. 30.48-crore scheme is also to be taken up soon for implementation.

Sources in the Kavundampalayam Municipality and the Vadavalli Town Panchayat say that fresh tenders have been invited and there are hopes of the scheme taking off soon.

According to sources in the municipality, the Bhavani scheme envisages a supply of nine mld for Kavundampalayam, four mld for Vadavalli and two mld for Veerakeralam.

Kavundampalayam and Kuniamuthur have already got one mld each from the Coimbatore Corporation's quota of Siruvani water to meet the demand for more water.

Sources in the Kavundampalayam Municipality say that the new scheme will help in making at least alternate day supply.

At present, supply is made once in six or nine days, they add.
