KOCHI: Commuters were put to untold misery on Thursday as workers of private buses plying to West Kochi went on a strike.

The strike was called demanding more space and amenities at the Fort Kochi bus stand, which is used by thousands of commuters each day.

The demands included construction of a bus stand with adequate space to park buses, and setting up of toilets in the area.

Buses from the city discontinued service at Thevara. Thus commuters were forced to reach their destination in private vehicles, KSRTC buses and passenger boats.

Most boats and KSRTC buses in the sector ran packed to capacity. Being a tourist destination, tourists too were caught unawares by the strike.

Though over an acre of land had been set apart in Fort Kochi to house the stand, the Tourism Department built a structure there. This resulted in utter confusion at the place from where around 150 buses operate daily services.
