DUBAI:
The authorities here have questioned industrialist Nusli Wadia after an undeclared firearm was recovered from his baggage at the airport.
The incident took place on January 13 after Mr. Wadia's arrival from Mumbai by an Air India flight. A revolver and some cartridges were found in the baggage.
Diplomatic sources told The Hindu that neither the Indian embassy nor the consulate here was involved in dealing with the incident. "Consular access was not sought, and the local authorities did not bring up the issue with the mission," they said.
Mr. Wadia's spokesperson confirmed that the baggage included a licensed firearm which had been placed there inadvertently by a domestic help.
Mr. Wadia was not detained. Mr. Wadia could claim the weapon at the time of his departure.
The spokesperson said Mr. Wadia had to rush to take the afternoon Air India flight after Emirates Airlines announced that its flight had been cancelled.
Mr. Wadia did not declare at the Mumbai airport that he was carrying a licensed firearm as he was unaware of its presence in his baggage.
